I&E 290 : Media, Entertainment, and Technology

description

The course "I&E 290: Media, Entertainment, and Technology" explored the media and entertainment space by focusing on key players and relevant trends in the industry in conjunction with how technology is revolutionizing the way content is created and shared.

reflection

I took this course as part of the Media, Arts & Entertainment pathway as it explored technological innovations within the media and entertainment industry.

The most important concepts I learned throughout this course:

  • Innovation starts with people. With the incredible capabilities of technology, we often forget that people are at the core of driving the advancement of technology within society. Through what I’ve learned from the cases, innovation starts where you least expect. Netflix didn’t start as the technology-driven company it is today. Instead, it sent people to deliver DVDs to the customer’s front door. And it was people who expanded this business model to adapt to evolving consumer needs. For my future career, I will do hefty research as I did for my spring internship at NBCU to ensure that the companies I’m applying to emphasize the value of all of our ideas to drive innovation.

  • Don’t be afraid to take risks. All of the entrepreneurs we talked about in class had one thing in common: they weren’t afraid to take risks. They didn’t simply adhere to the safe road, but instead, challenged themselves to act on their ideas, no matter how unconventional they seemed. It takes a lot of courage to take risks, and I’m working on mustering up that courage myself to be able to take my own creative risks.

Given the case "The Video-Streaming Wars in 2019:  Can Disney Catch Netflix?," I had to write a case study as if I was a leader at Disney.
